our Core Virtues of the Month are Graciousness and Courtesy. Students in Eastern Philosophy are learning about the Confucian concept of "Ren" which can be loosely translated as benevolence, goodwill, or putting others before yourself. Confucius believed that an integral aspect of a successful and stable society is the promotion and valuing of graciousness and courtesy among every member of that society. What are some common ways to act courteously toward those around you?
In this course, students will explore various tenets of four of the major philosophical traditions of the East, and use them to analyze and address issues in their own lives. They will learn the story of the Buddha and apply the Four Noble Truths to their own lives, will read Lao Tzu's Taoist text the "Tao Te Ching", will discuss the "Analects" of Confucius, and will determine how their interpretations of the "Bhagavad Gita" can serve them in thinking about their own path from a new perspective.
We just finished our unit on Taosim, and are midway through the Confucianism unit!
Our seniors are working hard on the first drafts of their Senior Thesis Papers! Students are busy researching and crafting theses on a wide variety of topics, from the ethics of gene editing, to the prison-industrial complex, to the philosophy of nothingness. We are now beginning to explore how to create an effective presentation, so that students can synthesize all their research into a coherent and compelling talk on their thesis subjects. Presentations will begin in Mid-May! Make sure you don't miss these seniors get a chance to show all their learning!
I grew up in Ithaca, New York, where I received my BA in English at Ithaca College. After college, I taught English in Indonesia on a Fulbright grant, then moved around the US for a number of years doing a variety of different jobs, including farming in Ohio, cheesemaking in Montana, tutoring and subbing in Texas and South Carolina, and assistant teaching in Louisiana. Before coming to Vanguard, I worked at Eagle Rock School in Estes Park, where I taught courses ranging from astronomy, to hip-hop history, to journalism. I love helping students tell their stories, and discover new things to wonder over. When I'm not working, I'm probably camping, playing board games, trying to publish children's books, or tossing a baseball around with my partner Sara and her dog Champ.Email

Hello! I am Jeanne Easton and I have been at Vanguard since we first opened the East Campus in 2014. I taught kindergarten for three years before moving solely into the role of special education teacher in the primary grades. I love working with these young learners as they begin their educational journey!
I was raised in Paradise, California, but have lived in Colorado for over 20 years. I have four boys who are the best thing in my life and my reason for everything. My youngest son has Down syndrome and was my motivation to obtain my Master's in Early Childhood Special Education from University of Northern Colorado after graduating from Brigham Young University-Idaho.
I enjoy all things Italian, as I used to live there, and am fluent in the language. I also love to travel, play the piano, do calligraphy and watch our beautiful Colorado sunsets.
I love Vanguard and all the staff, students and families that I have been able to get to know over the years!

I am a native of Colorado as I was born in Boulder, but grew up in rural Eastern Colorado. I did live in Kansas for a few months a number of years ago, but returned quickly to Colorado. I am beginning my 14th year working in education. I completed an Associate’s program at AIMS Community College in Greeley, CO in Elementary Education with an emphasis on English Language Acquisition. I also have a Bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio as a Mild/Moderate Special Education Interventionist. I was a paraprofessional for 10 years before completing my degree as a teacher. I am married and have three amazing adult children of my own. We spend as much time as possible together now that so many schedules keep us moving in different directions. We have a dog named Cooper and a chinchilla named Mouse, but growing plants seems to be out of my field of abilities. Like many of us, the remote aspect of our public education system is new to us all, but I did complete all of my courses with Notre Dame College through an online platform. I will be here to help navigate through everything that comes our way.Email

I am excited to be a part of the wonderful program at Vanguard Classical High School and look forward to meeting each of the students.email:

Coach Les has also been a high school football coach in Colorado for the past 16 years as well as a Basketball Coach for the Oklahoma Magic, a AAU basketball team that is represented by Adidas. He has several young men that have played for him in The NFL,CFL and College.
He can't wait to start this adventure at Vanguard Classical School.
LETS GO HAWKS!
Kevin has spent the last year as the Head Coach at Des Moines Area Community College and as an Assistant Coach at Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines, Iowa. In that time he helped Dowling accomplish a run of 5 podium visits and 4 state titles.
When he is not coaching he runs his own road race timing company The Open Road Chip Timing and works for in the food distribution industry.
Kevin lives and moved to Aurora in June with his wife Josie and two children Liam and Finney. He is a strong believer in the idea that all good things in life come from running.
I am Carrie Herring, 5th and 6th grade literature teacher and middle school cross country coach. I started running when I was a kid when I joined a running team for people with asthma. It was something my mom and I always did together. Last year I was pleased to be considered for the middle school cross country coach position, and I really enjoyed working with our amazing middle school team last year. I am pleased to once again be working with the middle school team this year. I can't wait to see all the amazing things they will accomplish this year.
My name is Jenny Young, and I am the head coach of the Vanguard Classical School’s volleyball teams. My love of volleyball began in middle school in Conifer, Colorado. I went on to play varsity volleyball for four years at Bear Creek High School where I also lettered in track each year. In college, I played for a year at the University of Northern Colorado. After college, I played in various indoor and outdoor volleyball leagues and coached one season at Alameda High School. Although I continued playing volleyball consistently, I took a break from coaching until I had the opportunity to coach the middle school girls’ volleyball team at Cherry Creek Academy. I coached those players for four years and grew that program from just 12 players the first season to over 30 players my last season. In 2019, I had the privilege of coaching Cherry Creek Academy’s first ever boys’ volleyball team. Most recently, I have been coaching the high school girls’ volleyball team at Vanguard Classical School where I am also the 5th and 6th grade writing and language arts teacher.
As a coach, I insist that my players understand that they are student-athletes, and that means academics come before athletics. When students truly love a sport, they work hard to make sure that their grades ensure eligibility. I believe in teaching players strong foundational skills upon which they can build
strength, confidence, athleticism and sportsmanship. My primary goal every season is to mentor players and help them to work together to become a team capable of playing well against any team they compete against. Last year, with a roster of just 9 players, we were able to finish 5th in a league of 21
teams. Being part of a successful high school sports program prepares student-athletes to compete at the college level if they choose, and their participation in organized sports helps players develop into young adults who are ready for future challenges that may even include a professional career in volleyball. I am very excited for the upcoming ’20-’21 volleyball season!
Hello, my name is Taylor Alexander and I am excited to be the new middle school volleyball coach for Vanguard Classical School. I am entering my first season but will also assist Coach Young at the high school level too. I have played four years of high school volleyball and other varsity sports. I also worked as the assistant sports information director at the University of Lynchburg in Virginia for several years. This year I want to focus on having a fun and successful season while building on skills for the next level. I am committed to ensuring that every athlete has a positive experience that fuels their love of volleyball and competition.
