Teaching has long been a calling in my life. As I enter my twentieth year as an educator (14th as a lead instructor), the question--Why do I teach-- becomes even more difficult to answer. I feel a bit like Socrates. All I know is that I don't know. Am I teaching to hone the mind of the next great intellect? Am I engendering character among the masses? Am I searching for Truth or the meaning of our existence? There are so many reasons I teach 6th grade math. It is impossible to boil it down to a few words. Teaching and learning are essentials in my life. Where can those necessities be found? The schoolhouse has them in abundance. My academic background includes an undergraduate degree from the University of Denver, a variety of graduate coursework both in and out of education, and an ever curious mind that feeds off of books of a variety of genres and disciplines. When I am not at school, I am usually parenting some combination of six children. When I can steal a moment for myself, I enjoy being active and competing in a variety of games.Email

I enjoy working at Vanguard because of the diverse population. I like learning about all of the different backgrounds my students come from and finding ways to incorporate that into my classroom. I have always had a passion for working with kids and have known from a young age that I would like to devote my life to it. My name is Monique Parra and I am the second grade Educational Assistant. I attended California State University of California, Monterey Bay and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in sustainable communities. During my undergraduate capstone I worked with fifth grade students to teach them about native plants in the community and the significance plants have to the local ecosystems. I discovered a passion for teaching through this experience. Working with children inspired me to gain working experience in education. I worked for a elementary school in Seaside, CA as an instructional assistant, assistant supervisor, and an after-school program leader. When I moved to Colorado, about a year ago, I became a substitute teacher. I have also been a classroom paraprofessional for a K-8 school in Aurora Public Schools. I then decided to continue my education and earned an Masters of Education with a concentration in environmental education. I chose education because I want children to explore their curiosities and be intrigued about the various subjects they learn through the curriculum. I also want children to learn important life skills that they will need to succeed in life. I believe that every child learns differently and I want to help them learn in their own unique style. My future plans are to enter a teacher preparation program and earn my teacher’s license in science.Email

My name is Kathleen Farley. I am currently a paraprofessional in the Special Education department. This is my first year working at Vanguard Classical School. I recently moved to Colorado from the Washington, D.C. area with my husband and four-year old daughter, where I worked as a hotel front desk agent. I have also had the exciting opportunities to participate in the Walt Disney World College Program in Orlando, Florida, be part of a cruise staff with the Holland America Line, and volunteer at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations at State University of New York at New Paltz. In my free time, I enjoy reading, going to the movies, traveling, and spending time with my family.
My name is Chelsea Dome. This will be my 4th year as a 1st grade teacher at Vanguard. I’m a native to Colorado and absolutely love living here! I grew up in Castle Rock, and I recently moved to Parker. I went to the University of Northern Colorado and received my degree in Elementary Education. I have always wanted to be a teacher and help my students grow as lifelong learners. I have a very large family; most of whom live in Colorado and I enjoy spending time with them on the weekends. I also like to swim, hike and dance. I’m looking forward to a great school year!Email
I bring experience of five wonderful years at Vanguard; two of these years as a paraprofessional. I am now embarking on my third year as an Educational Assistant in 1st grade. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, power walking, and watching movies. I enjoy being outside and I also enjoy cooking. Even with all my hobbies, I spend the majority of my time with my wonderful 15-year-old daughter, Emily. Emily was a student at Vanguard Classical School from kindergarten to the 8th grade. Lucky for me, I have been able to spend four of those in the same building with her. I am fortunate enough to have been able to work with some wonderful children and I really enjoy helping them grow. I love working with younger children. At this age, kids are very curious and love school. They are also experiencing many of their own “firsts” and it is fun to be a part of it!
